Punter Lingo: Pit Boss

While gambling at a casino, do you ever get the feeling you're being watched? Yes, aside from the hidden cameras that carefully trace your every step, there's always a well dressed, very authoritative-looking man or woman behind the tables keeping a close eye on things.

This person is known as the pit boss, and he's there to make sure everything's running smoothly. (The pit, by the way, is the area around which the tables are set up. It's where the dealers stand.) Most importantly for both you and the house, he's there to assure that everyone's playing by the rules. That means you, your fellow players and yes, the dealers. He's been trained to identify idiosyncrasies that could point to cheating.

But, the pit boss's job doesn't end there. It's also his responsibility to settle disputes. If a dealer accidentally deals incorrectly, the pit boss is there to dictate the resolution; if someone pushes all of the chips on a table out of place, the pit boss is there to see that order is correctly restored; if a player and a dealer are at odds over anything, the pit boss is there to set things straight.

Lastly, the pit boss hands out comps. It's his job to make sure that anyone who's spending lots of money at the tables is happy. It starts with free meals, but the more you bet the more generous the gifts get. Bet a whole bunch of money and you might land yourself a set of show tickets. Raise the stakes even higher and you could find yourself staying several nights at the nicest suite the resort has to offer. Just keep the money flowing and they'll keep the gifts coming.

But, even low rollers can take advantage of comps through the pit boss. If you play with any regularity, make it a habit to tell the pit boss that you want your play rated. He'll take your name and give you a plastic card that you hand to pit bosses at all the tables. When you give a pit boss the card, he'll take note of how much you buy in with and what your average bet is. Then when you leave, he'll enter that information into a computer and you'll get your card back. After accumulating enough credit through this system, you can cash in on freebies.
